The movie of Pengepungan di Bukit Duri is a surprising new step from Joko Anwar after a series of successful horror films that made his name. No longer themed on supernatural terror or spirits, this time the film is an action-thriller full of tension and brutality. In this 11th film project, he collaborated with Amazon MGM Studio and managed to present a different story than usual. Releasing simultaneously in Indonesian theaters from April 17, 2025, the film takes viewers into the chaotic future of Jakarta – and will definitely keep you in suspense from start to finish. Have you watched it or are you still on the fence?
A movie about the year 2027, but inserting the wounds of 1998
From the beginning, this movie already felt “different”. Not because of the genre, but Joko Anwar’s courage to include the dark issue of Indonesia’s history in 1998. How crazy, how brave! The result? Many reviewers agree that this movie deserves to be called a work with an “original idea” in the midst of a flood of film adaptations and remakes that are again taken from Twitter threads.
The movie is set in the year 2027, where Jakarta is depicted to be on the brink of crisis-full of conflicts of racism, violence, and hatred. The atmosphere? Very similar to Batman and Joker’s Gotham City. The story focuses on Edwin (Morgan Oey), a man who disguises himself as a teacher to find his nephew. His search takes him to Bukit Duri High School – a place for outcast students.
But the problem is not that simple. Edwin has to deal with Jefri (Omara Esteghlal), a delinquent student and gang leader who is… well, let’s call him a “pig hunter”-a strong symbol of racial hatred in this movie. The tension peaks when Edwin and several teachers and other students are surrounded while decorating the class. From there, the story turns into blood, anger, and brutal scenes that make the audience grimace.
Tense but not thrilling
Watching this movie is like riding a roller-coaster without brakes. Every second is full of suspense-seriously, your breath will be taken away. If you like non-stop adrenaline, you’ll love it. But… there’s a catch, the storyline is often predictable, and the ending doesn’t really kick in, instead it feels rushed to finish…. Honestly, when the credits started to appear, I had time to say, “Already? That’s it?”
Supporting Characters, but Not Supporting the Movie
Edwin and Jefri as the main characters are indeed stunning, that can’t be denied. But unfortunately, the supporting characters feel like extras – they appear, but don’t leave an impression. Like Mrs. Diana or Rangga, they just seem to be “passing through”, with no clear motivation or background. In fact, with a social theme as heavy as this, it would be more interesting if each character had a strong role and story.
Visual Display and Mise en Scene: Ace!
Despite his narrative weaknesses, Joko Anwar is still good at visuals and atmosphere. The images of Jakarta in chaos, the ravaged streets, and the brutal fight scenes are all taken seriously and in detail. The shattered street lights, thick smoke, and screaming mobs are all worked out in detail. The physical fight is measured, brutal, but convincing. Morgan Oey and Omara Esteghlal really sell their emotions in key scenes. Plus, there are new faces that make it fresh.
Not Just for Entertainment
For those of you who like movies with social messages, Siege at Bukit Duri can be an interesting discussion. This film touches on urbanization, marginalization, and racism, which are still very relevant to the current condition of Indonesia. Joko Anwar managed to touch the emotional side and present social reflections through entertainment media. So even though the story is short, at least this movie still has a strong message.
Pengepungan di Bukit Duri is still worth watching – especially for those of you who like action movies with local nuances and social criticism. I remind you not to expect the epicness of Perempuan Tanah Jahanam or the suspense of Pengabdi Setan, because this one focuses more on the issues and tension of the action than the story.
Important note: this movie is not suitable for all ages. Many violent scenes, harsh words, and brutal moments can trigger trauma. So make sure to watch according to age and for those who are age-appropriate, be mentally prepared!
