*SPOILER ALERT-Anora (2024) is a messy portrayal of family drama combined with a super complicated emotional game. If you like Knives Out-style suspense, this movie is for you. The difference is that in this movie, the main character, Ani (Mikey Madison), is in the spotlight. Sean Baker’s movie is rated 7.6/10 on IMDb.
Ani and her ironic dream
Ani always thought of marriage as a way out, as if becoming someone’s wife would instantly change her past. Ironically, even though she’s used to seeing men with money, she still believes that love can provide a stable life. She tries to sell that dream to herself, even though she knows better than anyone that marriage doesn’t always mean loyalty or security.
Ani who is tough and always in control
Right from the start, we’re introduced to Ani as a strong woman who doesn’t get carried away easily and seems to be immune to difficult situations. Whether it’s from being used to her work environment or thanks to the many things she’s been through in the past. Either way, it gives the main character a tough impression.
Throughout the movie, Ani is very good at hiding her feelings behind a flat expression and calm demeanor, always knowing when to be gentle, firm, or pretend not to care, adjusting herself to get what she wants without showing her fragile side, while her heart is breaking but outside still looks strong as if nothing can touch or break her down. It’s like she deliberately wears a ‘mask’ to create distance from the world around her. Ani, who almost always wears her ‘mask’ until the end of the movie, finally takes it off in front of Igor (Yura Borishov)-not through words, but in the way she understands best (sex). Even so, a sense of emptiness still looms over her.
The Saddest Moment of Taking Off the ‘Mask’
The most emotional moment in the movie is when Ani can no longer hold back the feelings of destruction in her heart. Her tears break out along with the tightness in her chest. She hugs Igor, not just to find physical comfort, but because for the first time, she feels a deeper intimacy. From that moment on, she began to discover a new side of herself.
NOT Family Friendly, Heartbreaking, and Memorable
Anora is a movie that takes us into the emotional journey of a woman who has to face the harshness of life and a world that always turns away from her. Although this is not a movie that is suitable for casual viewing with family, it is still a work that deserves to be remembered. The acting is really good, the story is so deep that it makes your chest tight, and leaves an impression that is hard to forget. What impression do you get from this movie?
